Medical Unit 3, Department of Medicine, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, located at first floor, of Administration Block, Services Hospital, Services Institute of Medical Sciences is a 50 bedded ward, providing medical, gastroenterology, hepatology & panctreatobiliary care to patients either planned or emergency. Our Unit has been recognized for postgraduate training in Medicine (2006) and Gastroenterology (2009) by CPSP and UHS for Medicine and Gastroenterology since 2018. The Unit has myself as Professor & Dean of Medicine & Gastroenterology and other trained clinical staff e.g., one Associate Professor of Medicine & Gastroenterology, 2 Senior Registrars of Medicine and 5 Fellows of Gastroenterology and one Fellow of Medicine to teach and trained Clinical classes of MBBS and post graduate trainees of FCPS & MD of both Medicine and Gastroenterology. The focus of the unit is to develop and enhance patient’s assessment skills and to identify acute medical care needs within a multidisciplinary context. As a multidisciplinary team, Medical Unit 3 promotes a friendly environment for patients and their families, focusing on individualized patient centered care. We also make sure that post graduate trainees and house physicians have ample opportunities and time for academics in Ward and they are encouraged to participate in national events, research and other activities. Besides compulsory workshops conducted by CPSP and UHS, Medical Unit 3 maintains a regular calendar for academic activities which includes case based presentation, journal club, basic and advanced life support skills workshop, mortality reports, ward audits etc. In addition, regular formative assessments and feedback are exercised routinely. They include Clinical Rounds Q & A, Individual assignments, Mini CEX, DOPS.

Medical Unit 3 has also multitude of other facilities for the needy patients:

  1. Recognized Advanced Endoscopic facilities like both diagnostic and therapeutic Gastroscopies, Colonoscopies, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCPs), Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS), Enteroscopy and Bispectral Index Score Monitoring for Portosystemic Encephalopathy.
  2. High Dependency Unit: Medical Unit 3 has its 5 bedded fully monitored HDU facility with HDU graded patients’ beds. These beds are of high quality with fully motorized capabilities of various positioning and CPR level if needed.
  3. Availability of Advanced Ultrasound machine is available and helps in diagnosis and intervention if needed.
  4. Maintenance of computerized record of admission, procedures, mortalities by use of Google Forms which were self-developed and are being used by Trainees to enter data to prepare various audit reports.
  5. Introduction to day care services. We are in providing daycare services to the patients after the Endoscopic procedures as well.
  6. Running Medical, Gastroenterology and Hepatology OPD twice a week.

In short, Medical Unit 3 is taking lead in managing and treating the patients in disciplined and friendly environment as well as providing state of the art environment and teaching for the training of its residents and Clinical Classes of MBBS. Medical Unit III is a 55 bedded ward, consisting of 1 male bay, 1 female bay and 1 HDU. It has 3 procedure rooms including 1 ERCP /EUS room and 2 endoscopy rooms.

Services provided by Medical Unit III include 7-8 medical emergencies of 24 hour per month, outdoor patient management via 3 OPD rooms working 7-8 days per month, indoor patient management via admission in ward. On average 1500 patient are attended in every single medical emergency, 250 patients on every single OPD, about 250 patients per month are given indoor facilities. Medical Unit III is providing Medical, Gastroenterology, Herpetology & Panctreatobiliary care to patients either planned or emergency. Two ERCP lists are conducted weekly with an average of about 50 procedures per month, whereas about 15 EUS, 200 gastroscopies and 50 colonoscopies are performed per month in Medical Unit III. Our department also arranges mocks examination for IMM and final FCPS examination along with routine classes and mortality meeting of PGRs. Medical unit -3 have also organised various BLS courses in year 2021 and 2022 for training of post graduate residents of various department to improve their emergency skills. Along with this various workshops including stress management, research methodology, communication skill, introduction to spirometry have been arranged in ward to increases knowledge and facilitate post graduate residents.
